Dr Steve Smith is a colorectal surgeon from John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, who has spent much of his upbringing in Papua New Guinea. Dr Smith graduated from University of New South Wales in 1993, completed General surgical training in 2001 and Colorectal CSSANZ Fellowship in 2003. He completed Masters of Surgery in 2005 at Sydney University. Dr Smith has been to the Solomon Islands a number of times, and was struck by the beauty of Gizo and its people. He has had a long involvement in teaching throughout his career. Dr Smith is currently a councillor for the CSSANZ society, and was involved in the planning of ongoing colorectal workshops at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara and Gizo hospital (the last in Feb/Mar 2017).
