This DASI trip departed Sydney 7am Sat 24th Feb 2018, and arrived Honiara Saturday 24th Feb 1:15pm with all volunteers checking into Kitano Mendana Hotel, then heading to National Referral Hospital (NRH) to do surgery in the afternoon. Sunday morning 10-5pm surgery at National Referral Hospital involved a laparoscopic ultra-low anterior resection, laparoscopic high anterior & bladder resection, and diagnostic laparasocopy then relaxation in the evening.
The team then headed to Buala Hospital, Isabel Province. The Head Nurse Helen Marau at Buala hospital did a wonderful job ensuring adequate preparation and adequate nursing staff on the wards and in OT, with necessary medical supplies and sterilised instruments for this one week surgical visit.
Dr Tony Quity and Dr Irene Eto did a wonderful job organising patients to attend screening Tuesday 27th Feb 2018. Volunteers and Surgical Registrar Dr Stallone Kohia from NRH departed Honiara for Fera Island (Buala) on Monday 26th Feb at 11:30am, and arrived Fera Island 12:10pm.
Khristine, Sally, Jenny & Rachel check into Famane Lodge which was a beautiful airconditioned home on top of the hill overlooking Buala, with a beautiful refreshing creek and natural pool for refreshing swim after a long days work, and long hot walk up the steep hill to the accommodation. The male volunteers all stayed at Maringe Lagoon Lodge (not air conditioned, but gentle breeze being next to the water) Mon 26th Feb, checked out Fri 2nd Mar 2018.
We screened patients at Buala hospital Tuesday 27th Feb 2018 from 8am – 10am, with surgerybeginning at 11am, and all day Wed 28th Feb, Thurs 1st March. In total 30 cases were done, with one take-back for bleeding after varicose vein surgery, with no other complications encountered. All DAISI members departed Fera Friday 2nd Mar 2018 at 12:55pm, arriving Honiara 1:35pm.
All volunteers regrouped in Honiara at Hotel Kitano Mendana the weekend, with formal debriefing session attended by the Under Secretary for Health Honorable Dr Greg Jilini, the Medical Director of Natinal Referral Hospital Dr Rooney Jagilly, and the Head of Department of Surgery Dr Scott Siota. It was a valuable feeback session, with all volunteers very happy, and planning to return next year. All volunteers departed Honiara together Sunday 4th March 2018 at 1:30pm returning to their home country (Australia and New Zealand)
