National Referral Honiara hospital is the largest hospital in the Solomon Islands and the national referral hospital, with over 300 beds and over 50 doctors. This hospital sees the vast majority of the medical cases in the Solomon Islands and is often overstretched, and at times at bursting point.

It has close alliances with Australia, and in times of need patients are often flown by aircraft to Australia for expert medical attention.

STAFF & CONTACTS

The excellent theatre staff make it a keen destination for visiting surgeons.  Whilst Honiara is the busiest hospital in the Solomon Islands, its infrastructure is sometimes stetched, and its medical supplies limited. Volunteers are very much welcome, and can be easily organised by emailing Karen Kiko (Supervisor of Overseas Specialist Visits) or by contacting Dr. Rooney Jagilly (Head of Department of General Surgery) or Dr John Hue  (Acting CEO & Medical Superintendent) +677 23600 (Ext 248) or +677 20806

ACCOMMODATION

Coral sea Resort comes highly recommended being the cheapest of the 4 star accommodation in Honiara costing $240 a night. Kitano Mendana Hotel is also very nice but expensive being AUD $270 a night. It has two lovely restaurants Capitano and Hakubai Japanese Restaurant and with meals not cheap costing approximately $50 per person.

Heritage Park Hotel is also very nice but overpriced with a standard room AUD $300 a night. It offers excellent dining at GG’s restaurant.
