Doctors Assisting In South-Pacific Islands (DAISI®) is a not for profit organisation providing medical and surgical training and assistance to people of the South-Pacific.
Who are we?
DAISI® is a small not-for-profit charitable organisation with just over 200 members, all of whom have volunteered with DAISI in the South-Pacific. Most DAISI members are from Australia and New Zealand.
DAISI’s emphasis is on helping its South-Pacific neighbours. DAISI has affiliation with over 10 countries and 35 hospitals in the South Pacific. DAISI has an established Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with each of the hospitals it sends volunteers to. The emphasis of visits is to provide requested specialist support and training. DAISI also reclaims and sends medical and surgical supplies to the South Pacific.
DAISI is open to membership to any qualified doctor or student doctor who has practiced volunteer medical work with DAISI in one of the the South-Pacific Islands including Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Islands of the South Pacific that are neither close to Australia and New Zealand or under the poverty line are not part of the scope of DAISI. Associate membership is available for non medical volunteers.
The aim of DAISI® is to empower the people of the South Pacific Islands with an emphasis on education, collaboration and a collegiate interaction with existing doctors and infrastructure. Teaching is a fundamental quality emphasised by DAISI®, as the aim is to promote self-sufficiency within the South-Pacific Islands, rather than reliance on foreign medical aid.
Donations received by DAISI® are used to fund volunteer trips to the South-Pacific Islands and used to purchase necessary medical equipment or supplies which is then directly given to the people of the South Pacific Islands. The Constitution of DAISI® provides for four Board Members which include the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.
