Prof Desmond Yip- Medical Oncologist
Prof Desmond Yip, is a DAISI member and a Medical Oncologist and the Clinical Director, Department of Medical Oncology at the Canberra Hospital. Prof Yip has been involved in the establishment of a medical oncology service at National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara. Prof Yip first conducted a scoping visit to the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara (Solomon Islands) in September 2016, on the request of the Medical Superintendent Dr Rooney Jagilly. The visit was planned and fully funded by the John James Foundation. Prof Yip also conducted a review to establish the first cancer unit in the Solomon Islands. Dr Andrew Soma, a medical registrar at National Referral Hospital, Honiara, was brought to Canberra in May/June 2017 for attachments at The Canberra Hospital, Calvary Healthcare Bruce and National Capital Private Hospital oncology units as well as the Clare Holland House Hospice. Prof Yip now works in collaboration with Dr Andrew Soma in establishing a medical oncology service at National Referral Hospital. During COVID travel closure Prof Yip has been a key participant in ZOOM educational/case discussion sessions for South Pacific surgeons and trainees.
