DAISI is committed to reducing its risk as an organisation, and to complying with ACNC requirements (Indicator E3.6) that all Australian NGO’s appying for DFAT funding have appropriate insurance policies (e.g. public
liability).

PUBLIC LIABILITY

  1. DAISI must ensure it maintains it currency of insurance for compulsory Public Liability insurance for each of its offices both in Australia and New Zealand, and the South-Pacific.

DOCTORS

  1. All DAISI specialist and non specialist doctors must provide DAISI with proof of current Medical Indemnity Protection for their insurer prior to being considered for a volunteering position in the South-Pacific.
  2. All specialist and non-specialist doctors must inform their medical insurance indemnifier of their intention to volunteer with DAISI, and the duration and nature of volunteer work.
  3. Most medical indemnifiers will cover volunteer work overseas, provided it is reported to them prior to occurring, involves less than 6 weeks in total for each year, does not involve any practice out of their usual scope of practice that they are currently registered for in either Australia and/or New Zealand, and is conducted in a manner that is compliant with local Country laws and obligations, including the obtaining of the relevant Country’s medical registration to cover the period of volunteering.
  4. All flights by volunteers should be purchased with travel insurance, to allow refunds compliant with terms and conditions, should a trip and flights need to be cancelled.
  5. DAISI members should be aware that travel insurance of does not include refunds due to unexpected natural disasters and epidemics.

NURSES AND MEDICAL STUDENTS.

  1. All DAISI nurses and medical students must practice under the direct supervision DAISI medical volunteers while in the South-Pacific.
  2. All nurses are encouraged to obtain insurance to cover them during their period of volunteering with DAISI in the South-Pacific.
  3. In addition to practicing only under the direct supervision of DAISI medical staff, nurses volunteering in the South Pacific must not practice out of their usual scope of practice that they are currently registered for with the Nursing and Midwives Registration Board in either Australia and/or New Zealand.
  4. Nurses must volunteer in a manner that is compliant with local Country laws and obligations, including the obtaining of the relevant Country’s nurse registration to cover the period of volunteering.

NON MEDICAL AND NON NURSING VOLUNTEERS

Where professional specialist volunteering involves engaging in activities that would ordinarily require registration specialist certification of registration, this registration should also be obtained in the South Pacific Country were volunteer services are being provided.

The exception to this is where non-official advice if being provided by DAISI volunteers to professionals in the South-Pacific, who ultimately make all decisions and are themselves covered by their professional practice registration.
