Gynae Trip to Solomon Islands (Gizo Hospital) 18th – 26th March 2023

This gynae trip to Gizo Hospital (18th – 26th March 2023) will be led by experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Alan Tong and anaesthetist Dr Leo Lacy. The DAISI team will involve four gynaecologists, two anaesthetists and one gynae registrar, one anaesthetic registrar, and one scrub nurse.

Screening of patients

Screening of patients by Gynae registrar Dr Angeline Nagu & Dr Saddler Zekele will occur on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th March.

Arrival of DAISI volunteers

Dr Leo Lacy will arrive Gizo 3:35pm Friday 17th March 2023.

Dr Alan Tong and the majority of the DAISI team will arrive Gizo 4:05pm Saturday 18th March 2023.

Dr Mandy Wang and Dr Martin Plymouth arrive Gizo Monday 20th March 2023.

Surgery

Surgery will commence Gizo Hospital at 8am on Monday 20th March until Thursday 23rd March 2023. Laparoscopic surgery training of gynae registrar Dr Angeline Nagu will be a major emphasis of this trip.

Relaxation

Friday 24th March will be a day of relaxation. a boat trip to Fatboys resort (20 minute boat ride) is highly recommended. Provided you are paying for drinks and food at the Fatboys restaurant all other facilities are available. For additional fee you can hire paddle boards, kayake, motoboat. Snorkling directly off the Fatboys restaurant deck (on stilts over the water) gives you views of the beautiful reef (coral and fish). Scuba diving should not occur within 24 hours of planned flight.

Return of DAISI volunteers.

Anaesthetists Dr Leo Lacy and Dr Yuting Liu depart Gizo Friday morning 24th March 2023.

The majority of the DAISI team departs Gizo 4:25pm Saturday 25th March spending one night in Honiara before returning to Sydney.

Dr Mandy Wang and Dr Martin Plymouth will depart a week later than the other DAISI volunteers, volunteering in the emergency department & medical ward.

Accommodation

Dr Leo Lacy and Yuting Liu are staying at Sanbiz resort. Dr Alan Tong, Nargis Noori, Jose Pereira, Mandy Wang and Martin Plymouth are staying at Aveala Lodge. Dr Pinar Cingiloglu is staying at Rekona Hotel, and Dr Dhivya Thangavel, is staying at Naqua Hotel. (right next to Aveala lodge).

Malaria Prophylaxis

Most volunteers are taking Malarone. This is started the day of departure.

All doctors have had their temporary medical registration approved.

Nurse registration

Ulla Makaenin’s temporary nurse registration has not yet been approved. We have been assured by chair of the nursing council that temporary nurse registration will be provided in time.

Recommended itinerary

The majority of the DAISI team will depart Sydney 7:05am Saturday 18th March 2023, arrive Gizo, Solomon Islands 4:05pm. stay Aveala Lodge, Gizo 7 nights. Depart Gizo 4:25pm Sat 25th March 2023, arrive Honiara 5:30pm. Depart Honiara Sunday 26th March 1:20pm. Arrive Sydney 7:35pm. flights approximate cost $2075. Seven nights at Aveala lodge costs $789 (cheaper option is Nagua Hotel $350) . One night a King Solomon Hotel costs $167. (total cost flights & accommodation $3031)
