itinerary
This one week trip in June 2020 will involve head and neck surgeon Dr
Linda Fenton, general surgeon Dr Douglas  Pikacha, Dr Michael Buin & anaesthetist Dr Narko Tutuo and a surgical Team

It will involve 5 days of surgery at Gizo hospital from Monday 14th June until Friday 18th June 2021.

Dr Narko, and most volunteers will depart Sydney 6:35am Sunday 13th June 2021 arriving Gizo 5pm  (luggage allowance 30kg)

Volunteers have the option of staying at Sanbis Resort (special rate of $80 a night)

Surgery will occur at Gizo Hospital from Monday 14th June until Friday 18th June 2021.

Sunday 20th June 2021, the majority of volunteers, will then travel to Vella Lavella by boat where they will stay at The Nepean House (JAC) free of charge,  and volunteer for three days (water piping project, teach children as well as first aid training), before returning to Gizo on Wednesday evening 24th for relaxation.

Most volunteers will stay check into Sanbis or Fatboys on Wednesday 23rd June, for 3 nights which cost about AUD$280 a night for a double room for two people.  The team will then check out Saturday 26th June 2021, travel to Munda by boat, and  depart Munda Airport 2pm Saturday 26th June 2021 (IE 715 baggage allowance 30kg), arriving Honiara Domestic 2:45pm, then depart Honiara International 3:45pm (Fligh IE 700 baggage allowance 30kg), arriving Brisbane International 6pm Saturday 26th June 2021. (flights cost AUD $460). The depart Brisbane domestic 8:05pm (Virgin flight VA992) arriving Sydney 9:40pm. (flight cost AUD $104).

Booking and paying for your trip

Accommodation and flights can be booked through Sally Smit from flight centre, with payment via DAISI’s Donate Now page.  In the comments section mention your name and “DAISI Trip June to Gizo” This will generate an automatic receipt.  Once payment made call or text DAISI secretary on 0411 248 910 to confirm payment, which will then be transferred to Flightcentre.  Sally Smit from flight centre will then issue you your tickets and itinerary directly.

Estimate of costs

$2,175 – $2500 for flights and accommodation in Gizo if staying at Aveala Lodge 7 nights and Fatboys or Sanbis 3 nights)

$2,665 – $3,000  for flights and accommodation (if staying at Fatboys or Sanbis for all 10 nights)

Boat trips and to and fom Munda and Vella Lavella will be additional.

temporary nurse registration

Since 2019 all nurses require temporary nurse registration and all doctors temporary medical registration to volunteer in a hospital in the Solomon Islands.

Please complete the application for temporary nurse registration or application for temporary medical registration (minus the credit card details as DAISI volunteers are exempt) and email it along with a copy of your nurse registration, current AHPRA certificate, nursing qualification, drivers license, passport, and national police records check to staff@daisi.com.au

Visas

Visas are issued on arrival for all Australian passport holders.

Malaria Prophylaxis & Vaccines

It is recommended that you see your GP prior to visiting to receive vaccination and anti-malarial advice.  Most volunteers take Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil 250 mg/100mg) film-coated tablets
once daily for two days before departing and during their time in the Solomon Islands. Pack Aerogard or RID to protect against mosquitos.
